What is Faecal Egg Counting?

Faecal Egg Counting (FEC) is a simple diagnostic technique, which calculates the number of internal parasite eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces. A strong relationship exists between the number of eggs per gram and the parasite status of the animal tested. FEC information is critical to making informed parasite management and treatment decisions.

What is the FECPAK system?

The FECPAK system brings the FEC test from the laboratory to the farm allowing "on the spot" parasite assessment for cattle that can be completed by farmers, veterinarians or consultants. The FECPAK unit is a customised purpose-built product containing all the equipment needed for calculating quick and accurate FEC. All equipment is designed to be used on-farm and has successfully been used and refined in the field since 1993.

The FECPAK system is simple to use and sets the standard for FEC accuracy. Tests take less than 10 minutes to complete. Once purchased there are no on-going costs and no limit to the number of tests the farmer is able to carry out. This means that FEC can be carried out on a much more regular basis than ever before.

Why do you need the FECPAK system?

FECPAK provides the farmer with the ability to monitor worm burdens on a number of herds quickly and cost effectively and without any hassle. High frequency monitoring can be undertaken and problems detected before significant production loss sets in. This regular monitoring has allowed the development of unique management strategies enabling the farmer to spend less time and money on worm control and not compromise production. Regular faecal egg counts in conjunction with existing farm management practices such as weighing and stock observation will also allow you to make more accurate drench decisions.

What do we get?

FECPAK units contain all the equipment needed for farmers to do their own FEC. The FECPAK System is supported by many training aids such as training videos and CD Roms and technical support through all international Brand Partners. System users also have access to the FECPAK online tutorials and information pages and library via the FECPAK website.
